The new FarmVille animal feed troughs have four stages: Empty, Half-full, Full and Animal Inside. After you have collected all 20 scoops of animal feed, it is time to wait for a wandering animal. You will know an animal stopped by when the trough doors close, the green light goes on and the pink collection bubble appears above the building.

Adopting a Wandering Farm Animal
Once you have collected the 20 feed scoops to fill your trough, you will get a pop up informing you an animal will stop by within a day. It also allows you to post feed for your friends.

Within a day, an animal will stop by and enter the Animal Trough. If you visit the Animal Trough in time, you will be successful in adopting the animal for your farm. You'll also be able to gift one to your neighbors.
Finding an animal uses up all the feed in your trough and you will have to collect or buy more to fill it.

If you wait too long to collect your wandering animal, it will go away. FarmVille Community Manager Stumpgrinder posted in his/her
"The Animal Feed Trough Guide" post that "too long" is defined as a couple days. Still a little vague, but less stressful than continuously refreshing your farm.
Losing an animal will cost you two scoops of animal feed, not all of them. Once you add two more scoops to your animal trough, you can go back to waiting on a wandering animal.

The Animal Feed Trough "Look Inside" screen will tell you which animals you have adopted. Wandering animals are also supposed to be updated periodically. It remains to be seen if you will be able to adopt more than one of each animal. Best guess is you will be able to or the Feed Trough will quickly become useless to many players.
